Vulval Self Examination - why is this important?
There are many skin conditions that affect the vulval skin. Some are itchy or sore and these symptoms are readily recognisable. You may only look at your vulva if you experience these symptoms. However, some conditions may not be sore or itch but the skin changes in colour or texture and a woman needs to actually look and examine the vulva for colour changes or for lumps, non-healing sores and report any changes to their doctor for diagnosis. Cancer of the vulva and VIN (a pre-cancerous skin disorder) are conditions where the skin can change colour in the early stages. Therefore it is best to recognise skin changes early. Early diagnosis can lessen the amount of surgery or treatment.
